genesis Winner of the Emerald Flake, 3/11/2001 ©2001 enigmA Improvisational poem: Subject: upturned earth Word: smother ------------------- seeking penance, searching truth gasping at cracks of light between illusions so long, so long smothered by the concrete convictions of familial unity she is done. this is the last morning she stands in her mother's rain, soaked to the skin- shivering in her father's rages. she trembles not, but in joy- the discovery of her hands, the ability to arouse new soil, underturn tangled weeds of denial and hate. this is her garden. tumbled loose earth, smelling of patchouli, life & promise unpacked after years of black nothingness, oppressed unto itself by judgment spade, depleted. she had not known flowers of such glory could grow here, in this garden. thorned green vines in their abundance wordlessly convincing cultivation would prove fruitless- years of twining tender flesh to planted stake had been all the reasoning needed. yet today, today is different. she awoke fresh from dreaming, of sweet ground singing her a vague lullaby soothing, nurturing her skin the vines scramble back, shrinking away with the night. from small mute seed, she had learned life's secret, her freedom lies in this no life can exist, subsist without the benevolent core alive beneath them, around them embracing their energies the true power, genesis, it lies there, in the dank, moist black earth in her hands. a genesis, not so far removed from her own flesh. a recreation, possible, a potential necessary, absolute, for soul survival... this is her garden. she smiles, and breathes in a thousand new beginnings.
